How to Give Yourself a Brazillian Wax While Minimizing Pain!
The idea of an at-home Brazilian can be extremely intimidating. We're here to tell you it doesn’t have to be a scary process at all! Staying calm and confident is the first step and once you've read these tips we guarantee- you got this!
✽ Hair Length
Waxing hair that isn’t the right length can become a nightmare fast. Optimally, when waxing your hair it should be between ¼ - ½ an inch long. Too short and the wax won't pick up the hairs, leaving hairs behind and resulting in a patchy finish. Too long and you're causing yourself unnecessary pain and mess. Having the hair too long can also cause the hair to break and not be pulled from the follicle. Use scissors to trim or wait that extra week before waxing!
✽ Warm Wax & Set-Up
Turn that wax pot on and start the prep! While your wax is warming, practise your posing. Grab some mirrors and set up an area. You may need to lift a leg on the tub or lay a towel and lay on the ground- find your poses! Not going in blind is key, make sure you have mirrors set up and no blind spots. Stretch if needed! Lastly, make sure the room you will be waxing in is not so hot that you’ll be sweating. A cool room will help keep the area dry and keep yourself cool and calm. When the wax is ready, test on the back of your hand to make sure the consistency isn’t too hot. You want honey-like consistency!
Time to get waxing! Alright babes the reality is this process can be painful, especially the first time or two, so minimizing that through each step is very important! Start with a pre wax oil to get rid of any sweat and body oils on the skin. This will help the wax only adhere to the hair follicle and not the skin, resulting in less pain for you! If any areas start to sweat during, use a little bit of baby powder to keep the area dry.
Start from the top and work your way to the back. The top tends to be the most painful so know the worst will be over soon! Track the hair grow directions and apply with the flow. Keep the wax sections no larger than 3 fingers wide and 4 fingers long. Use one hand to keep the area taut under the wax section you're about to rip. Don’t rip outwards which could cause bruising but stay up towards your chest. This technique will optimize hair removal and avoid extra pain. Let dry for 30 seconds or so and execute- follow through the opposite way you applied the wax and do it fast! Now repeat this step until you are finished and remember to stay hydrated and calm- you will be done sooner than you think!
✽ After Care
Post wax the area can feel slightly raw or sensitive. Use a post-wax oil to remove any excess wax and calm the area down. You may also use a cold compress to relieve the area if needed. Avoid things that will irritate the area further for 24-48 hours, this includes; intense workouts, swimming, baths, and anything that will cause friction or heat to the area. Remember the pores are open and you're at risk for infection so even minimize touching the area yourself.
Now that you’ve achieved a super smooth area, maintaining it becomes a lot easier. Waxing slowly makes the area become more sparse and less coarse. You read that right! Less sparse and course- a dream come true! These results normally last 3-4 weeks before needing another waxing session. Try not to shave in between sessions or else this will cause the hair to come in just as coarse as before. Lastly, exfoliate the area 48 hours after your wax to avoid ingrown hairs and once a week in between waxes. Now enjoy the hassle-free life and throw out those razors!
